Education, Research, Film & TV

Education

As well as enjoying ourselves on and off the battlefield, one of the aims of the Sealed Knot as a charitable organisation is to educate the public on the English Civil Wars and their place in our history.

Hawkins regiment are extremely lucky to have a few individuals dedicated to and experienced at talking to the public.

One of the ways we do this is by school visits.  Because these visits are usually during working hours, we have to limit the number we can do, to a handful a year, but we are always looking for new members who are willing to get involved in this hands-on way.

Research

If you do become interested in the Civil War period through re-enacting, it is likely that you will want to know more about the people, period and places.  Several of our members have helped push back the veil of time and have uncovered history that has been hidden for years, and in the process also shed new light on Stephen Hawkins, Ralph Dutton and the times they lived in.  Some of their work can be seen in the REGIMENTAL HISTORY section of our members web site.

Film And TV WorkPike drill performed for Blue Peter.

As well as re-enacting battles and skirmishes, the Sealed Knot often gets asked to supply extras for films and TV.   Sealed Knot members have appeared in popular TV series such as: "Sharp",   "Hornblower", "By The Sword Divided" and "Time Watch".  One of our own Hawkins' members even had a small stand-in role as a Kevin Costner lookalike, in "Robin Hood - Prince Of Thieves" and more recently, another Hawkins hero was an extra in "Gladiator"!

As a regiment, Hawkins also get involved in the field of TV work.  Recently, we did a piece for "South Today", an article for "Blue Peter" and provided the shots to portray the seige of Alton Church for a film on the Pilgrims Way.

Individually a cumbersome and inaccurate weapon, the musket was a devastating weapon when fired in a volley. Employed to defend musketeers against the onslaught of a calvary charge, Pikemen are the "hard" men (and women!) of any regiment.
